It’s the fringes of the world that interest me, not its center.

Polyvalent Spaces:

Donna Cleary and Kathline Carr

On view from August 25th to September 21st. Curated by Michelle Daly

exPRESS Gallery, 49 Main Street, North Adams, MA

The title of this exhibition is taken from Michel de Certeau’s The Practice of Everyday Life, where he writes “It is polyvalent because the mixing together of so many micro-stories gives them functions that change according to the groups in which they circulate.”

At first glance the pairing of Donna Cleary’s reimagined fetish objects and fertility statuary with Kathline Carr’s richly textured drawings and paintings may appear to have little in common. However, the work of each artist suggests a narrative interpretation, and invites the viewer to create associations and micro-stories.

The dialectical relationship between art and inhabited space, between embodied and embedded knowledge, and the tension between the familiar and the strange are all prevalent in the work included in this exhibition. Polyvalent Spaces grounds this relational exploration into the place where it was created - North Adams, MA - but invites a multiplicity of associations as you weave together the threads of the exhibition. Polyvalent Spaces will be on view August 25 - September 25. The Gallery is open Mon - Sat. 10-6; Sunday 12-4

Local Color: Selected Works from the Assets for Artists North Adams Project

Curated by Kathline Carr

exPRESS Gallery, 49 Main Street, North Adams, MA

North Adams, MA-- Downstreet Art presents Local Color, an exhibition showcasing work from 7 artists participating in the North Adams Project, part of MASS MoCA's Assets for Artists program, a local initiative that helps artists to build their creative practices. Local Color refers to the distinctive features or personality of a particular place as well as being a painting term, so it seems a fitting name for a group show of relocated artists, all drawn to North Adams’ vibrant artistic community. The exhibition will feature the works of Max Spitzer, Joshua Harriman, Sarah Pike, Michelle Daly, Megan Tamas, Jim Peters and Kathline Carr. The opening reception will take place during the DownStreet Art Thursday celebration, from 6-8pm and will run from July 28 th to August 21 st .

My book Miraculum Monstrum, winner of the Clarissa Dalloway book prize, is forthcoming from Red Hen Press, Los Angeles.

Miraculum Monstrum is an epic hybrid poem that merges the experiences of Tristia Vogel, a female artist who experiences a radical physical transformation that begins with the excrescence of apparent wings, and the curator who mounts a posthumous exhibit of artifacts of Vogel's life and work.
